Bulldog is a worldwide popular breed. It got its name thanks to the history of the breed: initially, these pets were developed for fighting bulls in England of the 18thcentury. Back then, they were called Old English Bulldogs. However, representatives of that breed eventually died out. All modern Bulldogs originated from them, though. In 1971, American breeders decided to recreate the line of Old English Bulldogs. However, those dogs did not gain popularity again.

Bulldogs are brachycephalic dogs. They have a short muzzle and strong jaws. Because of that, they cannot catch prey and not let it go for a long time. Such characteristics were especially valued during the times of bull-baiting. Bull-baiting is a blood sport that was created by Englishmen. They put bulldogs against bulls, and the process was bet. Such way of entertainment and making money became forbidden in the first half of the 19th century.

Nowadays, Bulldogs are kept as companions. Very rarely are these pets used for hunting.
