Rottweiler are loyal dogs. They get very attached to the owner and do not get easily through his change: pets become sad and aggressive. These dogs show affection by loyal service to one particular person. That is their main purpose.

Rottweilers treat strangers with suspicion. These pets will not feel calm until they make sure that nothing threatens their territory and owner. Rottweilers are innate fighters. They react to danger immediately. No thieves can pass unnoticed past this dog. If a fight starts, Rottweilers will fight till the end. This breed is perfect for people looking for a faithful and brave guard.

Despite having guarding characteristics, Rottweilers are very affectionate and friendly inside the family. They get on well with other animals. The most important thing is that they are paid equal attention to. If a Rottweiler feels that it is being ignored — it will start a conflict.

These dogs like children and active games. However, sensibility hides behind Rottweiler`s strength and stamina. They can feel the mood of people and immediately react to family conflicts. Constant noise and shouting make them angry and aggressive. It should be taken into consideration if the dog will be living in a house.

A disobedient Rottweiler is dangerous not only for people around, but for the family as well. That is why the dog needs to be trained starting from a young age. They are smart but stubborn. It is important to be confident and strong so that the pet listens to you. If a Rottweiler does not respect its owner, it will resist training by growling and biting. If a puppy behaves aggressively, you need to squeeze its snout, pick it up in hands and shout at it. It is important not to beat the dog. Cruelty damages dog`s psyche and makes it uncontrollable.

Training should start after the puppy turns 1 month old. This procedure should take 10–15 minutes every day. The first thing the dog needs to remember is its name. Then, start teaching it basic commands like «no», «come here», «go to your place». When the dog is 3–5 months old, you can teach it more complicated commands like «fetch», «stay close», «walk», «voice», «barrier», «go ahead», «go back». Training the dog to protect and to attack should be done by professional trainers.

The Rottweiler dog needs to start learning to socialize in first months of its life. The earlier the puppy starts getting used to other animals and street — the better it is. It is safer to walk an adult dog in a muzzle.

Basic Care

Rottweilers do not require much time to be groomed. Their short hair should be brushed once a week. During the molting period — in spring and fall — 2 times a week, using a stiff bristle brush. Then pet your dog with wet hands to take off left hairs.

Rottweilers are neat dogs. They should be given a bath 2 times a year, using shampoos for short-haired pets. Their paws need to be wiped after each walk. Clean pet`s eyes and ears when needed. Dogs`s teeth should be brushed once a week, using a special paste and a brush. That is how tartar will not develop. Rottweiler`s claws needs to be trimmed once in 10 days.

Rottweilers can be fed with either high quality dry or natural food. They quickly gain extra weight, that is why their diet has to be controlled. Such natural ingredients can be fed to the dog: not greasy meat — beef, chicken and rabbit meat; grains — rice, oatmeal and buckwheat; fat free dairy products — cottage cheese, kefir and sour cream; boiled vegetables — cabbage, carrot, beet and potatoes. The pet needs to eat 5% of its body weight per day. If you are going to give your dog dry feed — give 20–40g of it to every1 kg of dog`s body weight. A puppy under the age of 6 months should be fed 3 times a day, then — 2 times a day.

Rottweilers will feel fine about living in a flat if they get enough physical exercises every day. They are not that active inside, and a small yard will be alright for them. It is recommended to give your Rottweiler from 4 to 10 cups of high-quality dry food, divided into 2 portions. Keep your dog fit by measuring amount of their food and feeding them twice a day.

Rottweilers need physical exercises for comfortable living. Without them, dog`s personality will spoil and it will get over-weight. The pet needs to be walked 2 times a day for at least 20 minutes. It is better to do that for 1 or 1,5 hours. It is important to notice that Rottweilers are sensitive to heat. Being active in hot weather can negatively affect dog`s heart functioning. Rottweilers can live either inside and outside. However, keeping in mind their purpose, it is better to keep these dogs in an aviary.

Health and Illnesses

Rottweilers can live up to 10–12 years if treated well. Sometimes — up to 15 years. These dogs do not live long because of their large sizes and common diseases.

Hip dysplasia is a hereditary health issue that makes dog`s femur not stay close to the hip joint. As a result, it gets inflamed and destroyed. For that reason, if a dog starts limping — you should take it to a vet.

Elbow dysplasia is also a hereditary disorder. It appears because of disturbed development of the elbow joint and incorrect distribution of pressure in it. Both hip and elbow dysplasia have a similar symptom — the dog starts limping.

Aortic stenosis is a congenital heart disease that develops because of narrowing of the aortic valve. It helps blood circulate from the left ventricle to aorta and other organs. By narrowing, the valve puts more pressure on dog`s heart and makes its walls thicker. Symptoms usually occur at late stages, but when the dog is young.

Osteosarcoma is a malignant bone tumor that usually appears in large dogs. The main symptom is limping. If the tumor is not removed, its metastases will quickly start spreading to other bones and organs.

Hypothyroidism is either congenital or acquired deficit of hormones of the thyroid gland. It causes infertility, obesity, incorrect skeletal development and fatigue.

Rottweiler`s stomach is very sensitive. That is why they should not be overfed. If the dog eats too much, it might develop an upset stomach.

History of the Breed

Rottweiler is an ancient dog breed. Their ancestors were Mastiffs. Mastiffs were used by Roman legions of Claudius Augustus to protect cattle during campaigns in Germany. On their way, pets mated with local breeds, leaving their traces. Having reached Germany, Roman people occupied its southern part. Because of warm climate and fertile lands, they started raising cattle and developing farming. Mastiffs continued serving them and protecting cattle.

Dogs of this breed got their name from a town called Rottweil. At those times, it was a meat center of Germany. Hunters used well-trained dogs for protecting meat storehouses. For faithful service, pets got called «butcher`s dogs». They helped not only to guard meat, but also to transport it.

In the middle of the 18th century, a railroad was built in Rottweil. Dog`s popularity decreased. In a show in Heilbronn in 1882, only one Rottweiler took part. The situation changed 20 years later. People remembered about these dogs because one of them helped a local policeman stop thieves. Local newspapers wrote about this incident. That is how German people remembered about guarding qualities of Rottweilers and started using them for police service. Their popularity was rising. In 1921, the Club of German Rottweiler lowers was established and the standard of the breed was developed. The club lived through WWII. Rottweilers were being developed not only in Germany, but also in the USA. Their popularity was rising. Rottweilers appeared in the Soviet Union in the 80s.
