Personality

Central Asian Shepherd Dogs are calm and proud. They do not like worrying when there is no reason for that. That especially describes males. Their main purpose is to guard their territory and owners from strangers. Central Asian Shepherd Dogs can live in packs. Having a leader and working in a team is important for them. Despite having good fighting qualities, Central Asian Shepherd Dogs know how to keep the border between being strict guards and nice dogs. These pets are fearless guards on their territory, but when they leave it — they become obedient pets. They like resisting and making their own decisions. The dog has to understand why it needs to perform commands. That is why, instead of showing aggression, you need to praise and encourage your pet to learn something new. That is the only way to make your Central Asian Shepherd Dog a loyal and obedient guard.

Your pet needs to start being trained after it turns 3 months old. It is better to do that at the same time, spending 20–30 minutes a day on the procedure. Central Asian Shepherd Dogs are sensitive to sounds. That is why it is better to train your pet in a quiet place. It is important to teach your dog not to jump at other people. An adult Central Asian Shepherd Dog can weight up to 80 kg, and it will not feel that nice if such a pet decides to jump happily on someone. Before the pet turns 6 months old, it need to learn such basic commands as «sit down», «go to your place», «no» and «come here». It would be better if all family members participated in the training process. This will help the pet adapt to the new environment more quickly.

That is why during the molting period — in spring and fall — their hair needs to be brushed every day, using a special brush. Then pet your dog with sticky gloves to take off left hairs.

Central Asian Shepherd Dogs need to be given a bath once a month. You do not need any special shampoos for that. Then wipe your pet`s hair with a towel. Hairdryer damages dog`s hair structure. Check your pet`s eyes every day and wipe them when needed, using cotton pads soaked in tea. You should clean your dog`s ears once in 10 days, using cotton pads. It is not recommended to use ear sticks. Dog`s teeth need to be cleaned once in 2 weeks, using a zoo-paste and a long brush. As a prophylaxis from tartar, your pet can be given bones and cartilages to chew on. Claws of Central Asian Shepherd Dogs do not need to be trimmed. They get shorter during street walks.

Taking the size of Central Asian Shepherd Dogs into consideration, they need to be fed a lot. They should mostly eat not greasy meat — beef, veal and chicken (if the dog is not allergic to it). Additionally, such ingredients can be added to dog`s diet: grains — buckwheat, rice and oatmeal; sea fish; offals — beef liver and heart; vegetables — carrot, bell pepper, pumpkin, squash, cucumbers and tomatoes; fat free dairy products — sour cream, cottage cheese, kefir and baked milk. Once a week, a raw or boiled chicken egg should be given to the dog. If you choose to feed your dog with dry food — it needs to be of premium quality. It is important not to mix dry and natural food in one portion. It is better for them to change one another. A puppy under the age of 2 months needs to eat 6 times a day; under 3 months — 5 times a day; under 5 months — 4 times a day; under 10 months — 3 times a day; then — twice a day, in the morning and in the evening.

A Central Asian Shepherd Dog needs much free space for comfortable life. You can keep it in a flat, but it is recommended to do that only before the dog turns 1 year old. An adult dog will feel uncomfortable living in a flat. That is why a spacious aviary with a kennel would be the best choice. Alabai has to be walked twice a day. It is necessary to walk it on a leash and in a muzzle.

Health and Illnesses

Central Asian Shepherd Dogs can live up to 12 years if treated well. They inherited strong health from their ancestors. However, because of some unsuccessful breeding work, some hereditary and acquired health problems appeared in this breed.

Hip dysplasia — a genetic disorder that causes changes in the acetabulum of a dog’s joint, making it flat. This dislocates the bone and makes it rub against the joint. The dog starts feeling pain while walking. It is impossible to cure dysplasia.

Arthrosis is an advanced form of arthritis, which makes dog`s joints inflamed and causes pain while walking. It develops because of extra weight and injuries. If arthritis is not cured, it grows into arthrosis, which destroys connections between cells and tissues of the joint. It can be divided into 2 types: primary and secondary. Primary arthrosis can be diagnosed among old dogs because their joints lose ability to function with time. Secondary arthrosis develops because of accumulation of salt in cartilages after arthritis that has not been cured. Main symptoms of arthrosis include: limping, pain in joints and popping while the dog is moving. Uncured arthrosis deforms dog`s joints, and it stops being able to walk. That is why it is important to contact a vet when arthritis is only developing.

It is crucial to keep an eye on Alabai`s diet. Because of malnutrition, pet’s metabolism will be disturbed. It might lead to diabetes.
